Fat transfer is one of the most elegant ideas in aesthetic surgery: instead of adding a foreign implant or filler, it takes fat from where you have too much and moves it to where you want more — using your own tissue for a natural result. It’s used to sculpt the face, restore volume, and enhance the body. Here’s how fat transfer works and where it shines.
The short answer
Fat transfer (fat grafting) harvests fat from one area by liposuction, purifies it, and injects it into another area to add natural volume — commonly the face, or the buttocks and body. Because it uses your own tissue, results look and feel natural; some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed, and what remains is long-lasting.
How it works
The process has three stages. First, fat is gently removed by liposuction from an area of surplus — commonly the abdomen, flanks or thighs, which also slims that area. Second, the fat is purified to keep the healthiest fat cells. Third, it’s carefully injected in small amounts at multiple depths into the target area to build a smooth, natural result. Because it’s your own living tissue, it integrates naturally — the whole appeal of the technique.
Where fat transfer is used
- Face — restoring lost volume in the cheeks, temples and under-eyes for a refreshed, lifted look (a natural alternative to fillers).
- Buttocks / body — adding shape and volume, as in a Brazilian Butt Lift, while slimming the donor area.
- Contour correction — smoothing dents or asymmetries with your own tissue.
What to expect from the results
An important, honest point: not all of the transferred fat survives. The body naturally reabsorbs a portion in the first months, which a good surgeon accounts for by transferring appropriately. The fat that establishes a blood supply becomes permanent living tissue. The final, settled result appears over about three to six months. The double benefit — slimming the donor area while enhancing the target — is part of what makes fat transfer so popular.
Dr. Sherif Hegazy’s take: “Fat transfer is beautiful because it’s all you — no implant, no foreign filler. The skill is in gentle harvesting and careful placement, and in planning for the fat that naturally reabsorbs.”
Frequently asked questions
Is fat transfer permanent?
The fat that survives and establishes a blood supply is permanent; some is naturally reabsorbed in the first months, which the surgeon plans for.
Where does the fat come from?
From an area of surplus on your own body (often the abdomen, flanks or thighs), removed by liposuction.
Is it better than fillers for the face?
It’s a natural alternative using your own tissue; the right choice depends on your goals and is decided at assessment.
When will I see the final result?
Over about three to six months, once the surviving fat has settled.
